Got a server? Got a router? got a phone system? Have they, or your PC, ever developed unexplained gremlins? Well, you know when the office lights dim momentarily? . . . .
When considering whether or not purchasing a UPS is going to benefit their business most people only take in to account how many times their business has been affected by a power outage. This is innocent ignorance of what a UPS can actually do for your business. Asides from keeping mission-critical equipment running in the event of a power cut (the immediatley visible benefit of a UPS to any user) a true online UPS such as the Leibert GXT and Leibert PSI range can also drastically cut any corruption on your server. This is thanks to it's constant "cleansing" of any power supply. Many are aware of the surge and spike protection that a UPS can offer and the damage and corruption that can be caused to software, router firmware and databases from such occurances, but many are unaware of "brownouts". This is the opposite of a spike or surge whereby the supply voltage drops below desired supply and can cause as much damage, corruption and inconveniece as a spike. The true-online GXT range contains buck and boost technology. Boost takes care of voltage drops and can considerably improve the performance of any connected equipment.
Has anyone ever tried to scare you in to making a purchase? Well, we are about to try . . .
A long time ago, we did not have a UPS and we learnt the hard way! The software we run our company with had corrupted. Unbeknown to us, we had been taking corrupted back-ups for two weeks. We were left with no option but to delete 2 weeks' worth of business. As far as purchase orders, sales orders and invoicing was concerned this was merely a data entry bore and took about a day of hard graft. Bookkeeping, however, was a different matter. The fault of the initial corruption was down to "dirty power" and we did not recover fully for weeks. Scare tactics? Well, maybe. But this really is the voice of experience.
