The width of a 19-inch rack can be 482.6mm, 600mm, 800mm or anywhere in between. The problem with this question is that a "19-inch rack" is technically a component of a server or data enclosure but when most people use the term "19-inch rack" they are referring to the enclosure that contains it.
So whilst a 19 inch Rack Enclosure / Server Cabinet / Data Cab contains 19-inch mounting profiles the most common width for such an enclosure is 600mm. Many manufacturers produce an 800mm wide enclosure to allow room for additional cable management space.however, wall-mounted data cabinets tend to vary in width a little, for example, our standard wall-mounted rack is just 530mm wide.
We always recommend that you install the tallest and deepest cabinet you can practicably fit into the space available. Not just to bump up the sale, but with good reason;
Example scenario that has been lived a thousand times:
You have a bit of space under a worktop in the office kitchen and you reckon that 18U cabinet will fit just nicely under there. "I won't need to chop out the worktop. It will be fine, we only need 1x patch panel, a server and a router and Leo will get sad if I ask him to move his NutryBlendIT" you think to yourself.
Roll on 1, 3 or even 5 years and your cabinet it is full. Business expansion or simply the need for more tech has resulted in your 18U cabinet being rammed with another server, another patch panel, a SIP telephone system, another PDU, a proper network switch and it is full of cables but now the boss wants a decent UPS to keep it all running in the event of a power outage but it won't fit. You can't put it on the floor as sometimes Leo doesn't properly fit the lid onto his NutryBlendIT and will clog the UPS fans with Chia seeds. So now you have to spend lots of money and/or hours disassembling and untangling the contents of your 18U cabinet. Now Leo is sad as not only does he now have to keep his NutryBlendIT in his desk draw but he also can't surf the net for new smoothie recipes or do any work, whilst you chop out the worktop* to fit the cabinet you should have bought originally.
* To be safe, probably best, if possible, to relocate to somewhere that doesn't have taps.
